Business people meeting

I was scheduled to attend a conference today but it was cancelled. Though I regret the loss of a great learning opportunity that’s not why I’m extremely disappointed. I signed up because attending would give me the chance to meet two people I’ve communicated with through social media. Both were to be speakers at the conference. The first was Joshua Garity, a user experience expert who I’ve had many exchanges with in the past year or so. We were really looking forward to meeting in real life (IRL for the 140 crowd). The other was Olivier Blanchard (see last post).

White Hot Ad

Sambuca Ad

If you come here often, you might be surprised by such a straight forward post title — a direct tie-in to the visual. But you won’t be surprised by the segue into a discussion of web analytics which is the real reason I’m writing this.

The ad is pretty direct. Headline. Visual. No copy. The product is white Sambuca. Though clear, it is considered a white spirit (think white rum). Sambuca is often served straight in a shot glass and set on fire for a few seconds. Hence the “White Hot” headline and flaming background behind the bottle. The ad is targeted at people who know the product. It directs attention to this brand and reminds the occasional Sambuca drinker of their appreciation for the product.

Segue time. There’s another reason for title of this post.

New Public Image Design Business Cards

The cobbler’s children have new shoes and I have new business cards…finally. If you aren’t familiar with the cobbler fable, it’s about a shoemaker who is so busy making shoes for his customers that he neglects the needs of his own children. The reference is often used when someone with a specific skill seems to ignore their own needs – a painter whose own home needs painting for instance. In my case, the designer without current business cards.

The death of Flash

ipad flash

When the iPad was introduced early last year, forecasters expected Apple would sell 4 million in the first year. By the end of September, 7 million had been sold. Yesterday, in Apple’s quarterly financial report they revealed they had sold over 7 million more. Market research firm iSuppli said it expects iPad shipments to increase to 36.5 million in 2011 and 50.4 million in 2012. But this post isn’t really about the iPad. It’s about Adobe Flash.

Bad typography kills good content

BadType

You read it everywhere. “Content is king.” In the age of the blog with so much information available to be consumed, attracting readership is highly competitive whether in print or online. You can’t afford to make your content difficult to read due to poor typography.

I hate Men’sHealth magazine. It’s not the articles, I find those quite informative. It’s not the direction. I get it. Young target market. It’s not their relentless fixation on scantily clad models, that’s…um, tolerable. My problem is reading it. Or rather, the challenge of reading it. There are parts of the magazine I can’t read at all. Yes, I wear glasses and even with a new prescription, I find much of the content unreadable. I don’t have this experience with other magazines I read although I’m sure Men’sHealth is not alone in straining the eyes of its readership.
